Portland Road

The Portland Road site, located close to South Norwood Country Park, originally comprised of three smaller adjacent sites, the largest of which was a car sales depot. The sites together had a series of thin geometries which tapered toward the high street presenting a number of spatial constraints.

In response to these constraints we proposed a collection of five terraced houses as a continuation of the existing mid-Victorian terrace street which it bookends. The houses learn from the proportions and rhythm of the adjacent terraces whilst being clearly new in form and materials. The house’s internal arrangement is a combination of duplex homes and 2-3 bedroom houses which appear as regular terrace houses when viewed from the exterior.

Attic spaces have been designed with half-butterfly roofs which house the main bedrooms and en-suites. The folds in the roof punctuated with large south lights. At ground level front gardens, garden seats and low walls provide street presence with vertical timber facade panels lining the facade.

The housing typology maximises intensity on this ‘infill’ site whilst not compromising the streets existing character or grain.
